« Lighting Up the Brain » has taken a significant step in developing a molecular probe for the early, minimally-invasive diagnosis and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. The probe has the potential to cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB) using receptor-mediated transcytosis and target Aß oligomers, a biomarker presents in high concentrations in Alzheimer disease patients during the earliest stage of the disease. The probe contains a carbon dot which can emit light in the Near Infrared Region, allowing the molecular probes to be detected non-invasively using fNIR-Spectroscopy.
